Enhancing Future Occupational Therapists’ Competencies with Southpaw Pediatric Equipment

At Huntington University Arizona, we are committed to preparing the next generation of occupational therapists with the highest standard of education and practical experience. Central to our approach is the integration of cutting-edge tools and technologies that offer our students unparalleled hands-on training. Among these invaluable resources is the Southpaw Sensory Integration (SI) equipment, an essential component of our curriculum that enhances the learning experience and prepares students to meet the diverse needs of children with sensory processing challenges.

Southpaw Equipment: A Comprehensive Learning Tool

Southpaw’s SI equipment is renowned for its quality and effectiveness in supporting sensory integration therapy. At Huntington University Arizona, our students have access to an extensive array of Southpaw tools, including swings, balance beams, crash mats, and various sensory input devices. Unique to our program is two cohort models: Traditional entry-level OTD and an OTA/PTA-OTD Bridge. Each cohort has its own unique hands-on learning component, and we are able to rely on Southpaw to provide the equipment we need to ensure both cohorts have meaningful and enriching experiences while on campus. Each piece of equipment is thoughtfully designed to address specific sensory needs, providing a multi-sensory environment that simulates real-world therapeutic settings.

  • Swings and Movement Equipment: Swings, such as the platform swing and hammock swing, offer dynamic movement experiences that help children develop vestibular processing skills and sensory regulation. Students learn how to use these swings to facilitate sensory exploration and motor planning in a controlled, therapeutic environment.
  • Balance and Coordination Tools: Balance beams and balance discs challenge children’s proprioceptive and vestibular systems, promoting coordination and spatial awareness. Our students practice creating evaluation and interventions that integrate these tools to enhance motor skills, balance, and increased occupational performance.
  • Sensory Input Devices: Items like weighted blankets, tactile panels, and interactive sensory toys provide opportunities for students to design interventions that cater to individual sensory needs. Through hands-on experience with these devices, students in both cohorts gain insights into how different types of sensory input can impact therapeutic outcomes.
  • Hands-On Training for Real-World Impact

The integration of Southpaw’s SI equipment into our training program allows students to engage in realistic, hands-on learning experiences. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, students design and implement sensory integration activities, evaluate their effectiveness, and adjust their approaches based on individual client needs. This practical experience is invaluable in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice.

Students also benefit from observing and participating in simulated therapy sessions, where they interact with the equipment and children in a setting that mirrors real-world scenarios. This experiential learning approach ensures that our graduates are well-prepared to apply sensory integration techniques effectively in their future careers.

    Preparing Tomorrow’s Therapists for Success

At Huntington University, we believe that equipping our students with the best tools and resources is essential for their success as future occupational therapists. The Southpaw SI equipment is a testament to our commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience. By integrating this equipment into our curriculum, we ensure that our students acquire the practical skills and confidence needed to make a meaningful impact in the field of pediatric occupational therapy.

As we continue to innovate and enhance our doctoral program, we remain dedicated to nurturing the skills and expertise of our students, preparing them to excel in their careers and improve the lives of children and families they serve. This is in large part to having effective and state-of-the-art equipment provided by Southpaw.
