Verland—an intermediate care facility in Sewickley, PA, for those with intellectual disabilities—was seeking a new way to improve engagement with its residents. With 48 homes supporting 230 individuals, Verland designs a plan of care to increase residents’ independence, self-determination, and meaningful relationships within the community.
To get a customized Multi-Sensory Experience solution that would significantly increase the ability of their residents and staff to connect and explore, Verland called Southpaw. Southpaw works closely with therapists and specialists from all over the country to create the finest Multi-Sensory Experience products possible. And we’re proud to be the only manufacturer of MSE equipment in the United States.
To ensure that residents and staff get the most out of our solutions, our team provides comprehensive design services at no charge. The equipment is simple to install yourself, or we can install it for a modest additional charge. And if your facility has an unusual space, we can customize the equipment to fit in your room.
To ensure the project met the needs of the Verland team, Tom Marshall, Director of MSE Sales, Training & Product Development for Southpaw, met with them on-site to discuss the goals of the staff and how to best serve their residents.
The new sensory room that Southpaw created for Verland gives its residents their own space while providing the staff with a new way to reach them, whether that means calming them or inviting them to connect and explore on a deeper level.
When it comes to controlling the sensory room, residents need little to no training. The super controller allows anyone to control the room with wireless switches, taking control of the colors, sounds, and other stimuli in the room.
Most of all, we want every Multi-Sensory Experience to be a success. Tom is happy to not only explain how the equipment operates, but also share proven strategies for managing emotions and behaviors.
Emily Smolak, the ATF/Habitation Service Manager of Verland, said: “Southpaw made the experience super easy from inception to planning to execution. I would certainly recommend Southpaw to another facility.”
